History of Framingham, Massachusetts

Framingham was settled in 1647 by John Stone. It became a town in 1700. This same year, Crispus Attucks of Framingham was killed in the Boston Massacre. Early industry included a grist mill and the manufacture of straw braid, bonnets, textiles, and cotton. Manufacturing remains a large contributor to the local economy. The Stage Coach line, transporting passengers and mail from Boston, made frequent stops in Framingham during the 19th century, helping to boost local business. In 1834, the Boston-Worcester Railroad came to town. The building site of the railroad was south Framingham, giving life to a new area of the town. Industries flocked to the area to have their products shipped by the railroad. Framingham is still a prominent town in central Massachusetts, perhaps best known for its shopping centers with Shopper’s World and various strip malls.
