Woburn Court Information

Middlesex County Superior Court relocated from Cambridge courthouse to 200 TradeCenter, Woburn, MA. It is close to the junction of Rts. 95 and 93. The Courthouse is located within an office complex that the Commonwealth has leased for five years. The Courthouse has 15 courtrooms, 15 jury deliberation rooms, and 22 holding cells for recent arrestees and those defendants brought to Court from various pre-trial detention centers. There is ample free parking at the Courthouse, both inside the parking garage and in the outside parking lot.

Cases that originate in Lowell Superior Court are often transferred to the Woburn Superior Court for trials and evidentiary hearings.

Woburn District Court is located at 30 Pleasant Street, Woburn, MA, in Woburn center.  Its courthouse has three courtrooms. First session, where most non-trial matters and restraining order requests are addressed, is on the first floor, just beyond the main entrance. The two courtrooms on the second floor are utilized for complex hearings and trials. There is usually adequate parking across the street from the courthouse. The Honorable Marianne C. The Woburn District Court serves the towns of Woburn, North Reading, Reading, Stoneham, Wilmington, and Winchester.

History of Woburn, Massachusetts

The first settlers of Woburn were a venturous group looking to extend Charlestown. Thus, the first name of Woburn was actually Charlestown Village. The village was built in what is now Woburn Center. The Town of Woburn was incorporated in 1642 and became a city in 1888. Woburn originally comprised of Wilmington, Burlington, and Winchester, but eventually the four towns divided.

Woburn’s economy consisted mainly of agriculture, but also included rubber production and tanning (leather production). The Middlesex Canal, which was finished in the early 1800s, helped manufacturers expand their sales and gave the residents another means of transportation. The railroad arrived in 1835 which also gave a greater range to where people and goods could travel.

Woburn is home to Benjamin Thompson, inventor of the drip coffee pot and kitchen stove, as well as actors Eric Bogosian, Nick Paleologos, and Fred Zollo.  Almost 370 years old, Woburn is full of history. Present-day Woburn features a mix of residential, commercial, and conservation areas.

A Civil Action

In the mid to late 1970s, a high incidence of childhood leukemia and other illnesses, especially in the Pine Street area of Woburn, shook Woburn’s citizens. In 1979, the City of Woburn discovered water contamination in two of its water wells. Citizens, including those whose children developed or died from leukemia, filed suit against W.R. Grace and Beatrice Foods for contaminating the water supply by improperly disposing of various chemicals at disposal sites located near the wells. The case was memorialized in the book A Civil Action, which was subsequently made into a movie by the same name. Today, Woburn's water supply is frequently tested and, apparently, contamination free.
